When most people think of the Emerald Isle, they envision rolling green hills, lush forests, and charming villages. However, there is another side to Ireland that is less well-known: its stunning mountain scenery. The tallest mountain in Ireland is Carrauntoohil, which stands at 1,038 meters (3,406 feet) tall. It is located in the Macgillycuddy’s Reeks mountain range in County Kerry. Climbing Carrauntoohil is a challenging but rewarding experience, and it offers breathtaking views of the surrounding countryside.
There are several different routes to the summit of Carrauntoohil, but the most popular is the Devil’s Ladder route. This route begins at the base of the mountain in the village of Glencar. The trail follows a steep and rocky path up the side of the mountain, and it takes about 3-4 hours to reach the summit. Along the way, hikers will pass by several waterfalls and tarns. The views from the summit are incredible, and on a clear day, it is possible to see as far as the Atlantic Ocean.
However, climbing Carrauntoohil is not for the faint of heart. The Devil’s Ladder route is challenging, and it is important to be well-prepared before attempting it. Hikers should wear sturdy boots and clothing, and they should bring plenty of water and food. It is also important to be aware of the weather conditions, as the weather can change quickly in the mountains. With proper preparation, climbing Carrauntoohil is a safe and enjoyable experience that will provide hikers with memories that will last a lifetime.
